Williams Exhibition

28th May 2025

Williams is the joint second most successful team in Formula One history, boasting nine Constructors’ Championships. The latest exhibition offers a comprehensive look at Williams from its inception to its current standing, while also exploring the broader aspects of Formula One. Visitors can delve into the evolution of safety measures, the intricacies of various tracks, and the sport's most intense rivalries. Additionally, the exhibition provides insights into the dynamics of a race weekend and the legacy of the third longest active team in Formula One.

Williams Grand Prix Engineering was founded in 1977 by Frank Williams, who had already made his mark in the world of Formula One. Partnering with Patrick Head, who led the design of many Williams cars, the team quickly rose to prominence. The 1990s were particularly successful, with Williams securing five of their nine Constructors’ Championships and four of their seven Drivers’ Championships, thanks to the design prowess of Patrick Head and Adrian Newey. Legendary drivers such as Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell, and Damon Hill have all been part of this iconic British team.

Williams is renowned for its innovative approach and competitive spirit. A key highlight is the FW14B, which perfected active suspension technology. This innovation maintained aerodynamic stability by keeping the car’s underbody and wings at a consistent height above the track, optimising downforce and minimising drag. Although Lotus pioneered this technology, Williams perfected it, contributing significantly to their success.

The exhibition features Nigel Mansell’s FW14, known for its distinctive red number five. Although it is not the FW14B that clinched the Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships, it represents the precursor to one of the best Formula One cars. Also on display is the FW16, driven by Damon Hill, which saw four different drivers during its life. From classic Williams cars to modern marvels, the exhibition includes the FW44 tub, offering a glimpse into a 2022 Formula One car.

The exhibition is designed to be interactive and engaging for all visitors. Highlights include:

• Lift-up flaps with questions and answers to test your knowledge.

• An updated film in the Williams Cinema showcasing factory line to finish line.

• Pitstops through time, where you can see the evolution of pitstops.

• An interactive Silverstone racetrack, allowing you to race against friends and family.

• An exploration of rivalries, delving into famous duels such as Prost vs. Senna and Hill vs. Schumacher.

Williams has played a crucial role in shaping modern Formula One by giving drivers their first opportunity to compete in the sport. Notable examples include Valtteri Bottas and George Russell, who both joined Mercedes after starting their careers at Williams.

Whether you are a die-hard F1 fan or a casual visitor, the exhibition offers something for everyone. F1 enthusiasts will appreciate the detailed look into the sport, while families and casual visitors will hopefully enjoy the interactive elements.

Come along and visit this refreshed space. Ever wondered about the various careers in F1 beyond being a driver? This exhibition is the perfect place to find out.
