A Gift in your Will
Haynes Motor Museum’s story started with the remarkable generosity of John Haynes OBE, who gifted his personal vehicle collection to the Haynes Motor Museum charity when he founded the Museum. John Haynes’ passion for motoring remains at the heart of everything we do today.
As an independent charity, Haynes Motor Museum receives no core government funding. By leaving a gift in your will, you can play a vital role in keeping our Museum available for generations to come. Your support helps us deliver inspiring learning programmes and ensures the conservation and preservation of the world’s motoring heritage.
Why Leave a Gift in Your Will?
-
Increase access to our Collection
Our on-site learning programme welcomes more than 1,500 learners of all ages each year. Your gift will help extend access to the Collection, ensuring that people of all backgrounds and abilities have the opportunity to explore, understand and be inspired by engineering, technology and design, for the benefit of individuals, communities and society.
-
Preserve our motoring Collection
Your gift will allow us to provide ongoing care for over 300 Museum vehicles, 2,000 small objects and 10,000 archive documents. This essential work ensures the Collection remains accessible to the public and safeguarded for future generations.
-
Shape the journey of the Museum
Gifts in wills help us thoughtfully develop our exhibition spaces, including the introduction of STEM-based interactives that link physics, materials and design principles with real vehicles and artefacts. This will allow us to inspire the next generation of engineers, innovators and problem solvers.
-
Conserve important historic vehicles
The vehicles in our care tell the story of motoring and its impact on society. With your gift, we can conserve and restore historically significant vehicles, ensuring these stories continue to be preserved and shared for generations to come.

What types of gifts can be left in a will?
A residuary gift, a fixed amount or a specific gift. A residuary gift is a percentage or share of the balance of your estate once all other payments and gifts have been made. Many people prefer to give a residuary gift because it keeps in line with inflation and does not lose value over time. Even 1% makes a difference. A specific gift is a gift of a specific item or gift, like personal possessions, land, shares, vehicles, motoring memorabilia etc.
Are gifts in my will inheritance tax free?
Yes, at the moment, if you leave a gift to the Haynes Motor Museum in your will it will not be included when valuing your estate for Inheritance Tax purposes. The value of your gift will be deducted from your estate before Inheritance Tax is applied. However, Inheritance Tax rules can change so it is best to discuss your will and the type of gift you might like to leave with your solicitor.
