Classic Vehicle Technician

  1. About the Role

    Haynes Heritage Engineering is recognised as a centre of excellence for the restoration and preservation of Veteran, Vintage and Classic automobiles, and need to recruit an additional vehicle technician to help grow the team.

    Working closely with the Workshop Manager, Administrator and fellow Technicians, you will provide top-level mechanical repair and classic car restoration, along with a superb customer experience.

    Servicing vehicles for over 35 years, Haynes Heritage Engineering specialises in classic cars, including restorations, MOTs, mechanical and bodywork.

    Haynes Heritage Engineering is part of Haynes Motor Museum, one of the leading museums and visitor attractions in the South West, with 125,000 visitors annually, you will join a dynamic and engaged team of over 120 staff and volunteers.

    Haynes Motor Museum was established in 1985 by John Haynes OBE and is home to the UK’s largest exhibition of cars and motorbikes dating from 1898 to the present day.

    We are an independent UK charity. All proceeds go towards delivering learning activities to inspire current and future generations as well as conserving and preserving our motoring heritage collection.

    In support of the charity, the Museum also operates a Trading Company which comprises: Haynes Heritage Engineering, Conference and Events, Café 750 & the Museum Shop which operates an online shop.

    With a team of meticulous and highly dedicated engineers who offer specialist restoration and servicing to an extensive national and international client base. The team deliver the full spectrum of engineering disciplines; from ground-up restoration and bodyshop fabrication to mechanical work and a state-of-the-art paintshop.   3. About You

    You will have a strong track record of performing high-quality repairs, modifications, and restorations on classic and specialist vehicles.

    Ideally, you will have at least 3 years of experience in a similar role within a classic or specialist vehicle environment, along with a Level 3 equivalent qualification in relevant fields. However, all relevant experience will be considered, and the role could be altered to suit the right candidate.

    A genuine passion for the classic vehicle industry is a must, and you will be given the opportunity to share this through your work on a huge range of classic vehicles, dating from 1930 onwards.

    You must have excellent teamwork & communication skills to ensure collaboration across the 4 workshop departments, allowing each vehicle and customer journey to be as smooth as possible.

  4. Experience & Skills

    • Demonstrated expertise in working with classic, vintage, and/or luxury vehicles, with a passion for preserving their legacy.

    • A genuine enthusiasm for classic cars, along with a commitment to producing top-tier repair and restoration work.

    • A patient and methodical approach to solving the unique challenges that arise when working with classic and specialist vehicles.

    • Only the highest level of workmanship on all vehicles – old, new and specialist – with correct, tasteful and period repairs the only acceptable outcome.

    • A very good knowledge of classic-car-specific components and how they work, in order to cope with the average day-to-day  vehicle booking.

    • Exceptional attention to detail in managing intricate repairs and restoration.

    • Strong organisational skills to securely handle and store invaluable components, ready for the rebuild process – and be able to assist in planning in any relevant 3rd party repairs.

    • High standards of self-discipline, particularly in maintaining a clean, tidy and organised workspace.

    • The ability to conduct thorough research, accurately assess project requirements and collaborate with team members to help provide accurate quotations on labour time required, to the workshop manager.

    • Good written and verbal communication skills to ensure information flows accurately across all four workshop spaces and be confident in speaking to customers directly about the repairs you have carried out.

  6. Hours and Structure

    Salary: £30,000 -£40,000 per annum dependent on experience.

    Location: Haynes Heritage Engineering is based in Sparkford, Somerset BA22 7LH, just minutes off the A303, the main trunk road to the South West.

    Contract: Permanent, full-time contract.

    You will report directly to the Workshop Manager. Occasional weekend work at shows and events with time off in lieu. The shift pattern is 8.30 – 17-00 Monday-Friday, with 1 hour of break time per day. Some flexibility is available on a case-by-case basis.
