MG’s most successful racing car!

Motor Racing thrived in the 1930s, encouraging manufacturers to produce cars for the road and track. MG responded with the Magnette K-type – its most successful racer.

Launched in 1932, the K-type came as the K1 saloon, the K2 sports car or the racing K3. Only 33 K3s were built, and they proved so successful that earlier K1 and K2 models were converted to K3 specification. This car, a 1932 saloon, was destroyed by fire in 1992 and rebuilt in the style of a K3.

It has the classic looks of a 1930s racer: MG radiator, wire wheels and externally mounted silencer. The 1 litre 6-cylinder engine, boosted by a supercharger, produces almost three times the standard power. A four-speed pre-selector gearbox and hydraulic brakes handle the performance.

K3s enjoyed success in international sports car races and record-breaking events, including a class win at the Mille Miglia in 1933 and fourth overall at Le Mans in 1934, MG’s best result.

The MG Magnette K3 is displayed in our Veteran & Vintage Exhibition.
